Patient Safety Education: Next PULSE of NY Training Session October 24

Patient safety group shows trainees how to protect loved ones from medical error.

A patient who is injured, sick, in need of surgery or a medical procedure, or just has an ailing body naturally needs to focus all his or her energy on getting well. People receiving medical treatment are often unable to ensure that medical staff follow proper guidelines and guard against medical error.

For this reason an advocate or “helper” is crucial to the patient's care. But what exactly does an advocate do? Who would make a good advocate?

"PULSE taught me how to advocate for my mother in a way I wasn't used to."

Hope Coleman

Patient safety advocacy and education group PULSE of NY regularly offers training for those who want to become advocates for their family members or friends.

The next training session will be held October 24, 2015 in Levittown, NY, from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

This “Family Centered Patient Advocacy Training” will prepare each person attending to be an advocate for one person or for the whole family.

Topics include:
• Communication skills
• History of patient safety
• Reducing patient re-admissions
• Minimizing the possibility of injury from falls, infection, medication errors, and much, much more

Hope Coleman, who attended a previous session of this training, says, “PULSE taught me how to advocate for my mother in a way I wasn't used to. I asked nursing home staff to contact the doctor and request some medication changes, and guess what: they did! I soon saw changes in my mother: three weeks later she was a different person, and I have PULSE to thank for this."

(Hope’s story and the stories of others who have benefited from this training can be seen in the PULSE of NY video “Voices of Patient Safety.”)

Participants who take this training will have ongoing access to the instructors to assist in decision-making and support for at least one year. As far as class space allows, anyone who takes this training may also register for refresher training sessions for up to two years at a reduced fee.
